They stood their ground in the Caribbean

The First Peoples of the Caribbean - Tainos / Arawaks,  Kalinagos / Caribs and Ciguayos resisted the efforts of the Europeans to dispossess them of their land, enslave them and ultimately to exterminate them. This theme also covers the Black Caribs of St. Vincent, the Maya of the Yucatan, the Black Miskitos /Miskito Zambo of the Caribbean coast of Central America and the “maroons” of Panama, who, while not native to the Caribbean, had established themselves as owners of a territory and were prepared to fight to defend that territory. It also covers the Black Seminoles of Florida since during the period under discussion, Florida was governed by the Captaincy-General of Cuba.
